See below for further explanation of the Green House concept.
Green House SNFs are small-scale skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) that are part of The Green House Project. This model offers a more home-like environment than traditional nursing homes by housing a small group of residents (10–15) in a cottage-like setting with private rooms, private bathrooms, and a communal kitchen and living area. The goal is to improve quality of life through a person-centered approach where residents have more autonomy over their daily activities, and staff are empowered to build close relationships with them.
Key features of Green House SNFs
  • Small scale:
Each home has a small number of residents, typically 10–15, in contrast to traditional nursing homes that can have 100 or more.
  • Home-like environment:
The buildings are designed to feel like a house, with features like a fireplace, a communal dining room, and open kitchens where meals are prepared in front of residents.
  • Resident autonomy:
Residents have more control over their daily lives, including when to wake up, eat, and sleep.
  • Private rooms:
All residents have private bedrooms and private bathrooms.
  • Empowered staff:
The traditional hierarchy is replaced with a model where a team of certified nursing assistants, called Shabazzim, are cross-trained and empowered to take on more responsibility for resident care and quality of life.
  • Person-centered care:
The focus is on creating a warm, personalized environment that supports the dignity and individuality of each resident.
Why the model is different
  • Replaces institutional feel:
Green House SNFs are a conscious effort to move away from the institutional and impersonal atmosphere of many traditional SNFs.
  • Promotes well-being:
The model has shown positive results, such as residents gaining weight and staff having higher job satisfaction.
  • Focus on relationship building:
The small size and empowered staff model allow for the creation of deeper, more meaningful relationships between caregivers and residents.
